When a Knoxville business gets a cabling quote, the first fork in the road is Cat6 or Cat6A. Some contractors quote everything in Cat6A to pad the number; some quote everything in Cat6 to win the job. The right answer for most small offices is a mix, and it's worth understanding why.
What the difference actually is
Both are twisted-pair copper cable that terminates in the same familiar RJ45 jack. Cat6 supports gigabit Ethernet at the full 100-meter run length, and 10-gigabit at shorter distances, around 55 meters, in ideal conditions. Cat6A supports 10-gigabit at the full 100 meters and is built with more shielding against interference between pairs. Cat6A is thicker, stiffer, more expensive per foot and takes more room in conduit and trays.
Where Cat6 is fine
- Workstations. Almost no office computer will need more than a gigabit in the foreseeable future, and most are limited by their own network port anyway.
- Desk phones and printers. These use a fraction of a gigabit.
- Short runs in a small suite. Even 10-gigabit works over Cat6 at the lengths a small office typically has.
Where Cat6A is worth it
- Wireless access points. Modern Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points can exceed a gigabit and draw more power. Cat6A handles both the bandwidth and the heat from higher-wattage PoE better.
- Backbone runs between closets or floors. Anything that aggregates traffic from many devices.
- New construction. If the walls will be closed for twenty years, spend the extra on the runs that might need it.
- Electrically noisy spaces. Shops and manufacturing floors with motors and fluorescent ballasts benefit from the extra isolation.
What matters more than the category
A perfectly specified Cat6A run terminated badly performs worse than a Cat6 run terminated well. The things that actually determine whether a network is reliable:
- Proper termination on both ends, to a patch panel in the closet rather than a bare plug dangling in the ceiling.
- Testing every run and keeping the results.
- Labels on both ends that match a document somewhere.
- Staying away from electrical runs and fluorescent fixtures.
- Plenum-rated cable where the ceiling space is used for air return, which the fire inspector will care about even if nobody else does.
What Workflow IT usually quotes
Cat6 to desks, phones and printers. Cat6A to access points, cameras that might be upgraded, backbone runs and anything in a shop environment. Every run terminated to a panel, tested and labeled.
