About Workflow IT

A small, owner-led team in North Knoxville that does the work itself.

William Townsend, founder and lead technician at Workflow IT

William Townsend

Founder and lead technician. Twenty years in technical support. Degree in Information Systems.

I started Workflow IT because I'd spent two decades watching small businesses get the leftovers: the newest tech on the help desk, the slowest queue, the account manager who only called at renewal time, and the fix that was always coming next week. The businesses that needed the most help were the ones getting the least of it.

Workflow IT is a small team that I lead hands-on, growing slowly and on purpose. Every technician who joins is held to the standards below, and I'll be the one making sure of it.

Why staying small is the point

Large managed service providers are built to scale. That's good for them and often fine for a two-hundred-seat company. For a dental office, a law firm, a machine shop or a property management company with fifteen people, it usually means you're the smallest account on somebody's list.

Workflow IT is deliberately small. Every client's environment is documented by the same people who support it. Nothing is lost in handoff because there is no handoff to a stranger. When something breaks at 9am, the person you call already knows what your firewall is, what changed last month, and what you're going to say before you finish saying it.

The trade-off is honest: Workflow IT doesn't run a twenty-four-hour call center, and won't pretend to. What you get instead is a direct line, a callback when we're on another job, and a technician who owns the outcome.

What twenty years taught me

  • Documentation is the job. A network nobody has written down is a network that will fail at the worst possible time. Every client gets a documented environment they own, whether they stay with me or not.
  • A backup that hasn't been restored is a guess. I test restores, not just backup jobs.
  • Most "computer" problems are cabling or Wi-Fi problems. That's why cabling is done in house instead of subbed out to whoever is cheapest that week.
  • Say the number up front. Pricing is flat, monthly, and itemized before you sign.
  • Know your limits. If you need a compliance auditor, a software developer or a phone-system specialist, I'll say so and hand you a name.

Where Workflow IT works

The office is in North Knoxville, and most clients are within about forty-five minutes: Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville and Alcoa, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City and Loudon, and Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. Remote support reaches further than that; structured cabling projects go wherever the work is.

Also for IT firms and integrators

If you're an IT company or a national integrator with a client in East Tennessee and nobody local, Workflow IT takes subcontracted onsite work: smart hands, hardware swaps, network closet work and cabling. Details on the onsite support and projects page.
